Keeping the event safe and legal

If you're holding an event to raise money for Kidscape, it's important to keep it safe and legal. Here's our advice on how to do that.

Insurance and permissions

If you are holding an event in a public place, you must get permission from the local authority or the property owner. If your event involves the general public, it’s advisable to have public liability insurance.

Food and drink

If you are organising your own refreshments, visit the Food Standards Agency for guidelines on preparing, handling, cooking and storing food. If you are hiring caterers, make sure you ask to see their qualification and food hygiene certificates. If you decide to sell alcohol please ensure the venue has an appropriate licence and their rules are followed carefully.

Bucket collections

If you want to collect money in a public place you need to obtain permission from your local authority, which usually has to be obtained well in advance. If you are planning on organising a collection on private property, for example, a shopping centre, supermarket or railway station, you must ask the landowner for permission. Often they request a copy of the charity’s public liability insurance, which we can supply, along with collection buckets and Kidscape t-shirts.

First aid

It is good idea to ensure you have first aid supplies on hand, and you will need qualified first aiders if you are organising a large event. Advice can be found on the St John Ambulance or British Red Cross websites.

Holding a lottery or raffle

There are some rules and regulations around holding a lottery or raffle. Don’t let this put you off as these are great ways of raising money and the rules are really easy to follow. For more information please contact fundraising@kidscape.org.uk.
