Kidscape Child Protection\Safeguarding Courses

Kidscape Child Protection trainers have previously worked for many years within the Metropolitan Police in Child Abuse Investigation and Child Protection Training. They have carried out Child Protection training for Kidscape in schools in the UK and around the world in British International Schools as well as in other organisations such as British Gas.

Basic Child Protection\Safeguarding

It is essential for anyone who works, or volunteers, in settings where they come into contact with children, to undertake Child Protection training to recognise the importance of Child Protection/Safeguarding issues. Staff should undertake this course every three years. This course is equivalent to level 1 and level 2 combined.

Aim:

The aim of this course is to enhance awareness and encourage good practice for all those who come in to contact with children, 0 to 18yrs, in a variety of settings, including schools, youth programmes, family support centres, community groups, through their work, or as a volunteer.

Objectives:

This course will help participants to: -

• Understand broad definitions of child abuse and neglect
• Deal appropriately with disclosures
• Have an awareness of how a child’s race, culture, gender and ability inform an assessment of their needs
• Know how to make a referral
• Act appropriately on suspicion or knowledge that a child may be at risk of suffering harm
• Understand the Child Protection system and professional roles within this
• Understand how discrimination can impact on children and families in the child protection system.
• Understand both victim and offender behaviour

This certificated course can also be held in your venue at a cost of £495 for up to 30 people per one day course, plus trainer's travel and accommodation, if applicable. Advanced Child Protection\Safeguarding Course

Kidscape’s advanced course is specifically designed for managers who are responsible for the child protection process in their setting. It is advised that those who apply for this course should have completed a Basic Child Protection/Safeguarding Course. Designated Child Protection Officers should undertake this course every two years. This course is equivalent to Level 3.

Aim:

To equip all those attending with the knowledge& skills needed to perform the function of ‘Designated Person’ or ‘Child protection Officer’ in their setting.

Objectives:

This course will ensure participants will: -

• Develop an advanced understanding of Child Protection issues
• Have a further opportunity to explore attitudes and values including race and diversity,   with regard to safeguarding children.
• Refresh & enhance their knowledge of signs and symptoms of abuse
• Understand that although it is plausible for child care practitioners to predict the likelihood of certain children being abused, more robust evidence is needed
• Understand that some children are resilient to abuse i.e. they see this as ‘normal’ behaviour
• Receive information about Child Protection processes, including Child Protection conferences
• Identify good practice in working with children and families, and reflect on their setting’s policies and procedures

Exploitation and Abuse of Children and Vulnerable People

This course is designed to give delegates an awareness and understanding of the exploitation of children and vulnerable people. It also enables delegates to recognise and identify the signs and indicators of exploitation and abuse.

It also addresses the issues faced by people working with children who may suspect a child and/or vulnerable person is or has been exploited or abused.  It explores duty of care imposed on individuals and statutory agencies. Lastly what are their responsibilities if a child discloses or exploitation is suspected.

Aim

To raise the awareness of professionals in relation to dealing with issues of exploitation and abuse.  What to look for and what to do if they suspect a child or vulnerable person is being abused or exploited.

Objectives

• Identify who are at risk of abuse and exploitation and why they maybe vulnerable
• Explain what abuse is and identify the different types of abuse.
• Describe what Significant Harm means.
• Identify what exploitations is and explore the different types of exploitation.
• List the different pieces of legislation relevant to child protection and vulnerable groups, including the Every Child Matters Policy.
• Explore and discuss the Victoria Climbie enquiry and the recommendations illustrated within the Laming report and the Bichard enquiry.
• Discuss what to do if you suspect a child is being abused (using the relevant documentation. 
• Explore to do if a disclosure of abuse or exploitation is made to themselves or others.
• Describe the meaning of ‘Duty of Care,’ and explain their role and responsibilities are.
• Discuss who abuses/exploits children and vulnerable people why they abuse. 
• Examine the different perpetrators of abuse.  Grooming and the cycle of abuse.
• Expore the differing methods used by perpertators of abuse and exploitation, including the internet .
• Explore the process/action to be taken in relation to disclosing and reporting allegations of abuse.
• Investigation process from referral to interview (ABE)
• Identify & explore the organisations safeguarding policies and procedures in relation to abuse and exploitation.
