Diver Tom Daley’s success yesterday in Rome is a fantastic example of how young people can conquer bullying from schoolmates and go on to thrive.
“We couldn’t be prouder of Tom, his school and his parents,” says Peter Bradley, deputy director of Kidscape, Britain’s leading anti-bullying charity. “They worked together to make sure the extensive bullying Tom endured would end. His strength in putting his treatment behind him, his dedication to his sport, and the wisdom of parents and teachers is key to his success.”
Tom’s own determination and the supportive atmosphere of his school demonstrate how young people can fight back against bullying. “Tom is a true role model who will give many young people real hope.” Crucial to the fight against bullying is breaking the secrecy. “Tom was brave in telling others he was having trouble—making the decision to tell can be almost as frightening as that 10-metre board.” Peter adds. “We hope that all young people will realise that the first step to breaking the chain of bullying is asking for help, and refusing to let the bullies win.”
