The report published this week by Childline stating there had been a 132 percent rise in complaints of female sexual abuse resulted in Kidscape being asked by the media for comment.
Peter Bradley, Deputy Director, was interviewed by two radio stations; City Liverpool and Sky Radio. Both stations wanted re-assurance that female sexual abuse was not on the rise.
“I explained that we did not think there was a rise in female sexual abuse but as young people felt more comfortable in discussing the topic the reporting of such incidents had increased. Due to a number of recent, high profile cases involving women sexually abusing children, the increased media coverage makes victims feel they are not alone. Removing isolation helps give confidence for victims to speak out and report their abuse,” said Peter Bradley.
The story was also covered by BBC News where Peter did a live TV interview about the worrying rise in reported cases. The article has been well received and we are now bracing ourselves for the media attention when Vanessa George, the nursery worker charged with abusing infants, will be sentenced in December.
