Baby P Verdict

The sentencing of the mother, stepfather and lodger for the death of Baby Peter angered the public and resulted in Kidscape calling the Attorney General’s Office to request that the leniency of the mother’s sentenced be reviewed.

We agree with the judge’s decision to give all three indeterminate sentences, which can lead to them spending longer in jail than had they been given the maximum sentence.  However, the 5 year minimum sentence for the mother means she could be paroled in three years (she has spent two in jail).

Although the Parole Board will not release anyone they consider to be a risk to children, the possibility of parole after such a short time does not, in our view, reflect the seriousness of her crime against a defenceless infant.

We understand that others, including MPs have also contacted the Attorney General’s Office and we await her decision.

Update

Kidscape is delighted that Baroness Scotland, the Attorney General has asked for the sentences of those who were responsible for the death of baby Peter to be reviewed.

We hope that he minimum tariff for the mother will be raised from 5 to at least 10 years before she can even be considered for parole.

We support the judge's decision to give all three indeterminate sentences, but feel that the possibility of the mother being paroled in such a short time is not just.
