This week a 14 year old girl was saved by her father from being raped
by a paedophile she met on the internet. The paedophile masqueraded as
a 13 year old boy and arranged to meet the girl. Fortunately she brought
along two friends who rang the father. He then managed to find his daughter
and the man just in time to stop the attack.
In light of the many young people like this girl who are being tricked
by paedophiles on the internet, Kidscape welcomes the proposed new laws
to tackle Internet paedophiles being recommended by David Blunkett.
It will become a criminal offence to make contact with a child with the
intent of committing a sex offence. This is an excellent idea to safeguard
children by preventing abusers luring a child to meet them, as happened
in the case above.
We also welcome moves to close a loophole in the law that allowed people to claim that sex with under 13's was consensual.
Michele Elliott, Kidscape Director.
