Press Release

Thanks to Marks & Spencer, Kidscape Children's Charity can teach thousands of young people to say 'BOO' to bullies.

As part of Marks & Spencer's commitment to community involvement, Kidscape was fortunate to be one of six charities to benefit from their charity Christmas Sales.

Kidscape is the only national charity working to keep children safe from bullying and child sexual abuse. As a small children's charity, we depend largely on the generous support from individual and corporate donations.

The £73,000 donation is an extraordinary amount of money for Kidscape. In fact, it's enough money to support to Kidscape's Anti-Bully literature, school training courses, peer mediation programmes, and a Helpline for parents for the next two years! Over 80,000 children and their families will be helped because of Marks & Spencer's continued support.

This support couldn't have come at a better time as violence in our schools and communities are on the rise. Children are increasingly in danger at the hands of their peers.

As one mother expressed:
'Despite the cliché, words are not enough to say what a difference Kidscape has made to us…despite all the media coverage on bullying there is surprisingly little help for families. Without your anti-bullying programmes I dread to think how my son would be'

Given the statistics that 1 in 12 children are so badly bullied that if affects their education, personal & social development, relationships, future education and job prospects, this support is vital for work that is so needed. The Home Office estimates that 10-14 youth suicides each year are directly attributed to bullying.
