The new guide, How to Stop Bullying is sponsored by Marks & Spencer. It will help teachers deal with bullying and cover topics such as helping victims and bullies, how schools can set up effective anti-bullying policies, liaising with parents, bully gangs, assertiveness exercises and much more. It has over 90 practical exercises.
Michele Elliott, author of the guide and Director of Kidscape, says: 'We get 12,000 calls a year on our help line from parents who are in despair about the bullying suffered by their children. Some schools deal with the problem brilliantly - others don't have a clue about where to start. We hope this guide will help schools put an end to bullying once and for all.
We have seen a rise in violent bullying which is very worrying. More parents report their children being threatened by other children carrying weapons and we have increased reports of girls becoming more physically violent Bullies seem to think that there aren't any limits to what they do and adults are backing off and even excusing bad behaviour.
Part of the problem is the trendy no blame approach which some schools have adopted - bullies do not have to take responsibility or apologise for their behaviour and victims feel there is no point in trying to get help because nothing changes.'
Kidscape's 300 page training guide is welcomed by parents. One said, 'it's about time something was done. My daughter took an overdose and nearly died. Maybe this will stop some other child suffering the way she has.'
