Black History Month takes place each year during the month of October to celebrate the outstanding achievements, history and contribution of Black people. You can use this list of helpful resources to explore Black history, heritage, culture and achievements at home or at school.
Below you'll find content suitable for use with both primary and secondary school pupils, parents and teachers.
Young Black Leaders
Young Black Leaders is the first fully comprehensive virtual PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education) course designed for young people of African and Caribbean heritage in the UK.
The YBL course teaches young people to be the leaders of their own lives by;
- Exposure to inspiring ancestral and community accomplishments
- Providing guidance to navigate their present
- Setting out and supporting personal plans for future career, business, personal and community goals

Our mission is to promote awareness of children’s and young adult literature by Black authors. Our online author directory lists traditional and self-published authors. Whether you are a student, parent, educator, librarian, avid reader, or someone who just stumbled upon this site, this resource is for you to expand your knowledge of Black children’s authors and the stories they write.

New Beacon Books was founded in 1966 by John La Rose and his partner Sarah White. New Beacon was the UK’s first black publisher, specialist bookshop and international book distributor. For over 50 years New Beacon Books has made available to Britain and its communities, poetry, literature, non-fiction, history and children’s books from Africa, Caribbean, Asia, African America, Europe, South America and Black Britain.

Listen to the audio introduction to the book by Robin Walker at www.whenweruled.com, and you will get a sense of how vast pre-slavery African history is. Beyond this core text, there are other less comprehensive, but more accessible books such as “If You Want to Learn About Early African History, Start Here” also by Robin Walker. This book covers 50 questions and answers about the history of Black people. Other places to find work on the Black experience, race and fiction with black representation can be found below.

Krystal Rubie, experienced Science Teacher, pastoral leader, Special Education Teacher and founder of Young Black Leaders. Rubie sets the scene for the racial experience for Black students in the UK and gives recommendations for how schools and parents may approach the issue and open dialogue surrounding race.
