Kidscape secures DfE funds for anti- extremism and radicalisation project
We are very pleased to announce we have been successful in securing a 15-month grant from the Department for Education to safeguard young people against extremism and radicalisation.
The Extremism and Radicalisation Awareness (EARA) training programme will work with both staff and pupils in secondary schools within eight London boroughs (Brent, Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham, Waltham Forest, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea), using our tried and tested 3-stage model. Work will start in schools from March 2017.
School staff will be trained in how to spot the signs of extremism and radicalisation among their pupils. The pupils themselves will be given the tools to know, for example, when someone may be trying to groom them online and encouraging them to take part in extremist or radical behaviour.
The need for additional support for school staff has been highlighted in recent conferences and reports, including the NUT 2016 conference, and comments by senior figures in the field who state that teachers feel “vulnerable” and reluctant to confront radicalisation (David Anderson QC, independent reviewer of terrorism legislation).
Our Director of Services, Peter Bradley, says:
“This innovative project builds upon our current safeguarding work in educational settings. We’re passionate about children’s safety and have been concerned for some time about young people who may be vulnerable to extremist ideologies. This new project will mean we are able to safeguard those young people who previously had little or no support.”
