The Business of CharityWe’re used to school children climbing our stairs and settling in for a day of training and talk. But on this June day, the students arrived in suits, carrying their briefcases rather than backpacks.
The London Business School, in Regent’s Park, has a world- wide reputation for the quality of its MBAs.
In order to give their students an insider’s look at the charity world and the similarities and differences between that and business, they contacted us, and asked what we could do to help them.
Now several dozen of their MBA candidates, men and women from Japan, France, Nigeria, Switzerland, as well as Britain, have filled our conference table for a day-long seminar.
They may have been expecting a lecture. But Michele has them working on activities immediately - designing a school that would be helpful to bullies, then breaking into small groups and defining bullying.
“I teach them strategies and techniques that have many uses, in the office as well as school. We want them to participate, not just listen to a lecture,” says Michele.
The advice isn’t all practical, however
“I show them our Kidscape films, and many are touched to tears. They talk lovingly about their own children’s experiences. The goal is to bring these CEOs out of their comfort zone, and to help them learn.”
Response has been extremely positive, with more sessions booked for the future.
