StoweKidscape, Stowe School and World Monuments – Partners in an innovative residential post-ZAP weekend.

There is little more beautiful than the Stowe School, especially on a sunny day in June. Sited on 750 acres of grounds, and based in one of the finest  neoclassical houses in Europe, the school numbers Sir Richard Branson and David Niven among its “Old Stoics.” It made a warm and welcoming—as well as stunning—backdrop to a new ZAP PLUS, an innovative residential program for a group of young people who had experienced a ZAP, when they arrived June 19.

*At its core was the goal of raising self esteem, and that was certainly a result for all involved. In addition,  the weekend was full of extraordinary moments.

Work to extend what was learned originally  was paramount; in addition, each visitor was matched to a Stowe “buddy”, and they shared the weekend, from the onset, including a singing lesson from the charismatic Stowe music master,  time in the drama room,  the evening barbecue and rock concert.

*Most popular was the animated walk with the school’s  beagle pack  that included plenty of  wags (the dogs) and hugs (the walkers).

Peter Bradley joined with Dr. Jonathan Foyle, C.E.O. of World Monuments Fund UK—and our downstairs neighbour—in working with the school to make the most of this unique opportunity.  Stowe was the perfect partner—thoughtful, sensitive and energetic in helping make the weekend a huge success. Their generosity in providing accommodation, food and meals enabled the participants to attend the course free of charge.

*The young people, who slept in the Stowe dormitories, were able to take advantage of such things as music lessons in the  pillared  within the landscaped gardens, as well as  the delights of hot chocolate with the house matron to cure a sleepless night.

Peter, Kidscape’s Deputy Director, who organised and facilitated the weekend, said,

“ This has been a wonderful experience for everyone concerned, but of course the main beneficiaries were the young people themselves who thoroughly enjoyed it.

Through a diverse range of activities the young people were able to confront challenges and overcome fears – the outcome is increased confidence which leads to a better outcome when facing bullies .

Matthew Way, House Master from Stowe School, ensured school staff and students were properly briefed and prepared for the visitors. Working as a team meant we were able to bring together three different charities to focus on the needs of bullied children.”

George Morris, a ZAP PLUS participant said, “I found it amazing due to the people I met and the activities that were provided. My favourite activity was walking the beagles.  I feel much more confident after attending this course.”

*Our thanks to Stowe School and its staff and students, and to Jonathan Foyle, and all at the World Monuments Fund.
