Dr Valerie Besag is a former teacher who is now a chartered, consultant educational psychologist. Since 1986, Val has been recognised as an international expert on school bullying prevention. She has done extensive lecture tours and training abroad, especially in Australia and New Zealand. Recently, Val was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to carry out world tour to study the systems in place to counter bullying in a variety of cultural settings.

In 1998 she led an extensive E C project, which included a team of professionals from six European countries visited the North East to learn from her work. Stemming from this, Val wrote the material for the award-winning CD-ROM 'Coping with Bullying'. This comprehensive resource for students, parents and teachers is available free of charge to all schools in the UK and Eire through the Rotary Club. Val's doctorate work was on girls' bullying.

Her specialist interests include bullying & gender issues and depression in the young. Included in her publications are 'Bullies and Victims in Schools' and the training manual 'We Don't Have Bullies Here!'.
