How can I teach my children ways to keep safe?
Tell your children that:
- you want them to tell you if anyone asks them to keep touching a secret
- it is OK to say no if someone asks them to do something that frightens
or confuses them
- you will never be angry with them if they tell you about someone hurting
or confusing them
- they don't have to kiss or hug anyone and that includes you
- most people are nice, but some people might harm children, so they
should not go with anyone unless you say it is OK
You can also
- make up a list of people they are allowed to go with - put it on the
fridge
- play "What If..."
games with your children to help them learn how to stay safe.
- make up questions like What would you do if you got lost, What
would you do if someone asks you to get in a car? etc.
